7 web hosting trends for 2023

by Wayne Diamond: Managing Director and owner at Domains.co.za
With nearly 2-billion live websites on the internet and 5-billion active internet users, the world of web hosting needs to be as dynamic as possible. Many trends affecting the domain name and web hosting industry are influenced by technology, but the major influencer will always be human behaviour.

It’s been a couple of years since Covid-19 and those hard lockdown days in South Africa, but the effect on the way we think, work and prioritise time has inevitably changed. It is therefore no surprise that these changes have had and will continue to have a direct impact on the web hosting space.

The top trends that we believe will become more prominent in the year ahead (and going forward):

1. Managed web hosting

The managed web hosting market is expected to increase drastically. Where the market share was USD 223 billion in 2020, it is estimated to grow to USD 329.1 billion by 2025. This is due to the rise in the number of small businesses, start-ups and side hustles joining the World Wide Web. Many of these people starting out do not have the technical skills to manage website backups, security or plugin updates, which provides hosting companies with a unique opportunity to offer all-inclusive solutions.

2. Niche market web hosting

Niche market web hosting allows hosting companies to stand out by targeting a specific growing audience with completely tailored offerings. Many bloggers, influencers, ecommerce businesses and WordPress websites will find it favourable to sign-up for hosting that has been specifically tweaked to function optimally for their unique needs.

3. Value-added services

In essence, monthly web hosting packages are affordable. Price point is therefore no longer the real differentiator when customers sign up for this service. It is also not about space and specs either; it is all about the value offering. What features, benefits, support and extra services will customers get when they sign up for your company’s hosting packages?

4. DIY website builders

There is a massive market entering the online sphere now that do not have the budget to create a website from scratch. By including an advanced website building solution as part of their hosting service offering, hosting companies can secure a portion of this market too.

5. Robust security

Cybercrime is, and will continue to be, a major concern for individuals and businesses. The pressure is on hosting companies to tighten-up security measures and deliver User as well as Domain Privacy Protection, in addition to two-step authentication, SSL (Secure Socket Layer) encryption, and more.

6. Artificial Intelligence (AI)

More web hosting companies will investigate employing artificial intelligence solutions to optimise routine tasks, monitor equipment and automatically detect security threats. The inclusion of AI can reduce labour, conserve energy, and save costs.

7. Green hosting

Every industry in the world can and should try to reduce their impact on the planet. Why? Because it is important to their customers, as people are increasingly choosing to live with intent and mindfulness. Not to mention that the biggest target audiences of web hosting – the Millennials and Gen Z groups – consider sustainability and environmentally-friendly products and services as key differentiators when making buying decisions.
